One side is soft stone (medium), the other side is hard stone (fine).
Mined near Hot Springs, Arkansas from deposits of novaculite, a silica rock comprised of very pure and compact granularity. These stones will polish the metal as it sharpens it and won't hollow it out like artificial sharpening devices.
